UEL to evaluate east London Sport 4 Life programme

UEL Psychology Professor Mark McDermott has been awarded £45K over three years to evaluate the effectiveness of an east London council-led health intervention programme.

The Active Sport 4 Life project is a 12 week exercise referral programme run by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD) with additional funding from Sport England, a non-departmental public body based within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The project aims to evaluate the added benefits to health and quality of life of participation in sport to an existing exercise referral programme.  A programme of activities will be provided by local sport clubs. The programme  will incentivise  participants and encourage their sporting activities beyond referral.

Professor McDermott, who has been appointed as an external advisor and will lead on data analysis and interpretation, said: “The project aims to evaluate the effect of incorporating a sport element into the exercise referral scheme for people with a variety of medical complaints in a London Borough. It is consistent with UEL’s aim to achieve excellence in the domain of health and sport related activity and with the School’s aim to develop a reputation for behaviour change research.”
